Belle Vue Sports Village planned for Manchester
Manchester City Council has revealed plans for a national home for both speedway and basketball, as part of the £10m Belle Vue Sports Village development.
It will offer new sports facilities for the community and elite athletes alike, while also modernising the existing Belle Vue Leisure Centre.
A purpose-built 6,500-capacity speedway will provide the Belle Vue Aces with their own home allowing them to hold weekend meets, which will strengthen the earning potential of the club.
The £4.5m cost will be funded through a loan by the city council, which will be paid back in the club's annual rent.
The National Basketball Centre, part funded by England Basketball, will include an extension to an existing sports hall to create a four-court training centre.
Other features at the facility will include a new 3G and rugby pitches.
Deputy leader of Manchester City Council Jim Battle said: "In an economic climate where leisure funding is under pressure, this development underlines Manchester's commitment to ensure access to top quality facilities for local people across the city - and reiterates East Manchester's reputation as a world renowned sporting centre."
