Baby wallaby kicked to death at Dudley Zoo
Three children were detained by police following a break-in at Dudley Zoo on 6 May after a baby wallaby was found dead.
The boys – aged between 8 and 11 years old – were seen by park staff acting suspiciously in the grounds shortly before the attack on the two month old animal.
It is believed the children broke into the marsupial’s enclosure in the West Midlands zoo, attacking the wallaby before throwing it into a nearby pond.
Chief executive, Peter Suddock, said staff at the zoo were all still extremely upset and that the incident ‘cut to the heart of the zoo’.
He said: “We are all dreadfully upset – especially the staff whose passion is to care for the animals. It’s tragic that young people are capable of this action.”
He added: “We are currently working closely with both the education authorities and the police. No-one should ever regard animals like this.”
