BBC to save Britain's heritage
One of 30 derelict historic buildings across the UK will have the chance of restoration if it wins enough votes in a forthcoming BBC2 series.
Presented by passionate conservationist, Griff Rhys Jones, Restoration will consist of ten one-hour programmes devoted to a geographical area of the UK and focussing on three properties at risk.
Every style will be featured, from cottages and castles to railway stations and chapels, from the earliest of times to the 20th century. The producers of the programme have relied on the expertise of English Heritage and other heritage bodies in making their selection.
Buildings so far nominated in England include Victoria Baths in Manchester, Bethesda Chapel in Stoke-on-Trent, Poltimore House in Devon, Greyfriars Tower in Norfolk, Broomfield House in Enfield and Wentworth Castle near Barnsley.
Wales is represented by Llanelly House in Llanelli, Northern Ireland by Belfast's Crescent Arts Centre and Scotland by Kinloch Castle on the Isle of Rum, Easthouse croft in Shetland and a TB sanatorium in Aberdeenshire.
Additional sites will be announced at a later date.
At the end of each programme, viewers can vote for which of the three buildings they would most like to see restored. Once a final shortlist of ten is reached, the series will end with a live programme and event at which the public will chose the winner.
Jane Root, BBC2 controller, said: Not only will viewers get to learn some fascinating history through the buildings we feature, but we'll be encouraging them to actually visit some of the UKs magnificent buildings.
The programme is being produced for BBC Scotland by Endemol UK and is due to be broadcast in the summer. Details: www.bbc.co.uk / www.endemoluk.com
