Aussie Lifesavers Win Commonwealth Championships
Australia has won the Quinquennial Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships in Bath, England.
The Australian women’s team won the women’s title while the men finished second giving Australia the overall title as Commonwealth Champions. The Championships were hosted by the Royal Life Saving Society UK.
The Australian Royal Life Saving team, the “Aussie Barras” competed in a range of events testing their lifesaving skills. Events included Superlifesaver, Line Throw, Manikin rescue and tow.
Stand out performers for the Australian team included Sarah Windsor who won the Women’s 50m Manikin Carry in a new Commonwealth record time of 36.71. Felysia Konakoff won the women’s 100m Manikin Carry as well as coming second in the women’s 200m Obstacle behind winner and fellow Aussie Sarah Windsor.
The women’s relay team also won the 4x25m Manikin Relay, the 4x50m Medley Relay and the 4x50m Obstacles Relay.
James Cohen won the mens 200m Obstacles with fellow Aussie Chris Timms coming second. Mitch Parkes was another stand our performer for the mens team coming second in the mens 100m Manikin Carry.
The mens team also finished second in the 4x25m Manikin Relay, the 4x50m Medley Relay and the 4x50m Obstacles Relay.
“Each team member displayed impressive performances in the pool in Bath” said Royal Life Saving National Sport Development Officer, Penny Hodgers.
“Retaining the title as Commonwealth Champions was what the team was aiming for and all team members should be congratulated on achieving this fantastic achievement.”
