Architects picked for National Theatre plan
The National Theatre on London's South Bank has commissioned architects Haworth Tompkins to produce a masterplan for the development of the Grade II-listed building.
Haworth Tompkins beat architects Dixon Jones, Levitt Bernstein, Allies & Morrison and David Chipperfield to win the commission. The masterplan is expected to build on Haworth Tompkin's previous refurbishment work on the theatre's studio annex, completed in November 2007. It is likely the plans will include the development of a site to house education facilities and to refresh the building's facade.
A National Theatre spokesperson said: "We want to explore ways in which the building can respond to the dramatically changing environment of the South Bank, and to the NT's evolving ideas of institutional transparency. There is also an ongoing need for replacement of infrastructure, and an increased pressure to reduce energy consumption. Haworth Tompkins has also been commissioned to produce a Conservation Management Plans for the building, which will be published on 29 December.
