Application submitted for £20m mixed-use scheme in Swindon
Detailed planning application for a £20m mixed-use Swindon scheme has been submitted by REID architecture on behalf of their client, Carillion Development Management.
The 12,820sq m scheme is situated on the site of the former Swindon Railway Works, which was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
The proposed new site will include 108 residential units, a 105-bed hotel, 1,130sq m of bars, cafes and restaurants and a 2,600sq m health and fitness club, to be housed in a refurbished Grade II listed building.
Aims of the proposal include the enhancement of the existing site by complimenting the original structures and reviving the sense of the original masterplan. The existing site has also recently been included on the tentative list of future nominations for World Heritage Sites
A decision on the scheme is due to be made in November 2003. Associate Director at REID architecture, Michael Hickey, said: "From the beginning, the planners have supported a modern solution and we had numerous discussions with them to develop together an appropriate response to such an important site."
