Algeria bans liquor imports
The Algerian government has adopted a 2004 budget that includes an amendment banning imports of alcoholic drinks.
The amendment was introduced by an Islamic party lawmaker and passed by the lower house on 10 November.
Finance minister Abdelatif Benachenou denounced the amendment saying it was “contrary to Algeria’s international commitments.”
He warned of a risk of reciprocity, saying trade partners, notably the European Union, could levy a tax on Algerian wine and beer exported abroad.
That failed to move the legislature during the holy month of Ramadan. Now, imported alcoholic beverages will be banned starting 1 January 2004.
The ban is likely to hurt business at hotels and restaurants and increase the already flourishing trade in contraband.
