Alberta Art Gallery to open in 2009
The Edmonton Art Gallery in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, will be rehoused in a new building and renamed the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA).
The 7,900sq m (85,000sq ft) gallery building will be located on Sir Winston Churchill Square in the heart of the city’s art district.
The facility will present national and international exhibitions and will act as a premier host for international, Canadian and Aboriginal art, education and scholarship.
Architects Randall Stout designed the new climate-controlled building to double the amount of gallery space at the former facility and to install educational classrooms for programming.
To mark Edmonton’s status as the 2007 Cultural Capital of Canada, the Province of Alberta contributed CAN$15m (£7m, 10.4m euro) towards the redevelopment in 2005, which has just been complemented by a further central government award of CAN$12m (£5.6m, 8.3m euro).
AGA is expected to open in late 2009.
