2006/7 Pool Lifesaving Grand Prix gets underway
Elite pool lifesavers from across Australia are battling it out in the 2006/2007 Pool Lifesaving Grand Prix Series.
The Grand Prix Series conducted by Royal Life Saving is a three-event series, held in 2006 in Sydney (June) and Adelaide (November) and in 2007 in Perth (March).
AUS$10,000 total prize money will be awarded to the overall male and female Grand Prix Championship winners from the series, a world first for the sport of pool lifesaving.
Competitors will be challenged by potential lifesaving scenarios, testing their speed and endurance.
Competitors range from ages 13 to 47, with World and National Lifesaving Champions competing.
The Sydney event, held at Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre on 3-4 June, was the last event before the Australian Lifesaving Squad, the Aussie Barra’s, travel to England in September to defend their title at the 2006 Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships.
Every five years the Royal Life Saving Society UK hosts the Quinquennial Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships in Britain, with this year the Championships being held in Bath between 24-29 September.
