13.5m St Moritz Hotel to open in July
A £13.5m hotel built on the site of the famous St Moritz Hotel in Trebetherick, Cornwall, is to open next month.
The new 48-room St Moritz Hotel is the first purpose-built luxury hotel in Cornwall for more than 30 years and is the brainchild of Hugh and Steve Ridgway.
Hugh is the managing director and developer of the hotel, while Steve is chief executive of Virgin Atlantic Airways. The brothers assembled a team of South West-based experts for the project, including architects Alan Leather Associates and interior designers Absolute Design, who worked on Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall.
The Ridgways acquired the old hotel in 2000 and knocked it down to build the current property. The only remaining feature of the old St Moritz is the indoor swimming pool.
“The original St Moritz Hotel was created by a passionate local entrepreneur called Mr Underwood in the 1930s,” said Hugh. “He was continually pushing the highest international standards of luxury, service and catering and in its heyday, the St Moritz had an unrivalled following among the elite of society, including politicians and film stars.
“As a team we are extremely passionate about recreating the original glory of St Moritz with the best of contemporary design and luxury.”
The hotel boasts a spa, gym, a restaurant and dining deck, a bar, a games room and landscaped gardens designed by Mike Nelhams, curator of Tresco Abbey Gardens.
