£1m Darwin exhibition opens at Down House
To mark the bicentenary of Charles Darwin's birth a new £1m permanent multimedia exhibition has been installed on the first floor of his Kent home, Down House.
The exhibition, called Uncovering Origins, features a hologram recreation of the scientist's cabin used during his five-year voyage on the HMS Beagle. Created by Designmap, on behalf of English Heritage, the hologram depicts Darwin sitting at his desk in a cabin designed by MDM Props. The attraction was fabricated by Wonderworks Media in collaboration with Paradigm AV and Electrosonic. The exhibition, part of the English Heritage-led restoration of the house and gardens, charts the progress of Darwin's ideas of evolution and includes multimedia tours narrated by filmaker Sir David Attenborough and broadcaster Andrew Marr about what life at sea was like for Darwin, plus a virtual tour of his study.
There are also three new 'Discovery Visits' for school groups to explore Darwin the Man; The Darwins: A Victorian Family through a range of hands-on activities; and Darwin's Garden – often referred to a Darwin's 'outdoor laboratory'.
