Prince officially opens Sheepmount Stadium
Sheepmount Stadium in Carlisle, which completed a £3.6m redevelopment last summer, was officially opened by HRH The Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward, last week.
The upgrade of the centre, which received £1.5m from Carlisle City Council and a further £2m from Sport England and the Football Foundation, included now creating an eight-lane running track which will enable National League meetings to be held at the stadium for the first time.
The football pitches were also drained and a new clubhouse with referee’s office and changing rooms built.
A new gym and fitness room was added as well as a clubroom and a training and education room.
Lord Pendry, president of the Football Foundation, said: “The fantastic facilities at the Sheepmount are really making a difference in opening up opportunities for local people to play sport. I am delighted the Football Foundation has supported the project.”
Stewart Kellett, regional director for Sport England added: “Sport England is proud to support the Sheepmount stadium. Over £1.2m of Lottery funding has been used for the redevelopment of the athletics track and facilities. Together with new changing and fitness rooms this means that more people will be able to take part in sport all year round.
“With our partners like Carlisle City Council we are committed to driving up participation levels in sport in our region. The Sheepmount stadium leads the way in offering fantastic community based facilities, for sports from football to running, which are used by beginners and elite athletes alike. It is also an important part of the drive to provide an Olympic legacy in the North West.”
The facility, which opened in August 2005, is managed by sports trust, Carlisle Leisure.
